Yes, it's because Apple's PDF viewer does not support '/ShadingType 4'.
I think someone on the list submitted a bug report to Apple about that
last year, but I guess it couldn't hurt to submit a new one.
Another solution would be to use the same trick as in PostScript, i.e.,
provide the option to subdivide the triangles instead of using the
shading stuff.
